If you’re one of the over 300 million people living in the United States, it’s important to understand and appreciate the freedoms we have. If you’re unsure about what those freedoms are—or feel like they’re being taken away—let’s take a moment to recognize just a few of the incredible liberties we enjoy that many others around the world do not.
Freedom of Speech
In America, we have the right to speak our minds. Whether it’s posting our opinions on social media, criticizing the government, or simply expressing how we feel, we are protected by the First Amendment. In many other countries, speaking out can lead to punishment, fines, or even imprisonment. Here, we have the freedom to express ourselves openly and honestly.
Freedom to Worship
One of the most precious freedoms we have is the right to worship—and to gather freely in worship. For me personally, that means the freedom to follow Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Through Him, we have the promise of eternal life in Heaven.
Everyone will spend eternity somewhere—either in Heaven or in Hell. Hell is very real, and it’s far worse than anything we experience here on earth. But there is hope: Heaven is a place of peace, beauty, and joy—streets of gold, and a home prepared for each of us. The way to get there is by accepting Jesus into your heart and choosing to follow Him. (I’ll return to this at the end.)
Freedom to Roam
Unlike some countries that impose curfews or limit movement, we’re free to go wherever we want, whenever we want. If I feel like going to McDonald’s at 3 a.m., I can. (Side note: I do miss when Walmart was open 24/7—sometimes 11 p.m. is just too early to close!)
But back to the point: our ability to move freely is something not everyone in the world has.
Where Our Freedoms Come From
So how do we have all these freedoms? Because the founders of this country built it on the foundation of God and liberty. And because brave men and women have fought—and continue to fight—to defend those freedoms. There’s more to the story, but that’s the heart of it.
True Freedom in Heaven
As I said earlier, the most important freedom of all is spiritual freedom—the kind that only comes through Jesus. If you want to be sure you’ll spend eternity in Heaven, start by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Ask Him to forgive your sins, come into your heart, and change you from the inside out.
After that, find a Bible-believing church, get a Bible, start reading in the Gospels, and surround yourself with godly people who will support your journey. It’s not always easy, but it’s absolutely worth it.
